This course is a BDE for any undergraduate student with an interest in the Japanese language, culture, study and work life, but with no previous knowledge of the language. LJ5001 will teach you basic Japanese to the level of A1.1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This course introduces students to the Japanese language, culture and customs. It begins with the learning of the Japanese Standard Writing System, which is a combination of Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Basic greetings and sentence structures are taught in a progressive manner from recognition to guided and independent reproduction. Apart from grammar explanations, the tasks incorporated in the course include exercises in listening comprehension, reading comprehension and conversational practice through role-play activities. A comprehensive range of teaching aids are used to engage students in interactive learning. Thus, this course will be beneficial for you to travel, study and work in Japan or for Japanese companies. Learning Japanese also makes you more employable in a globalised economy.

- Listen and identify basic Japanese phrases related to most immediate personal reference, such as basic personal family information, friendship and other social activity.
- Read and identify main points in basic Japanese text such as advertisement, poster or catalogues.
- Interact in a simple way to introduce family, friends and yourself using simple Japanese phrases.
- Repeat simple Japanese pronunciations and phrases.
- Write a short simple message and essay in Japanese.

This course will teach basic Japanese to the level of A1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This course introduces you to the Japanese language, culture and customs. Fundamental sentence structures and vocabulary are taught in a progressive manner from recognition to guided and independent reproduction, so that students can survive in a Japanese-speaking community upon completion of the course. A comprehensive range of teaching aids are used to engage you in interactive learning. Thus, this course will be beneficial for you to travel, study and work in Japan or for Japanese companies. Learning Japanese also makes you more employable in a globalised economy.

This course is a BDE for any undergraduate student with an interest in the Japanese language, culture, study and work life, who already possess a level of proficiency in the language equivalent to LJ5002. LJ5003 will teach you the basic Japanese to the level of A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In this course, students are introduced to a more advanced level of sentence construction and patterns. Through the introduction of formal and informal expressions, students will have a deeper understanding of the more complex Japanese social practices where the mode of speech is determined by corresponding variations in human relationships and behaviour. Students are exposed to more sophisticated dialogues recorded for listening practice with question drills to familiarize them to native-spoken Japanese. Thus, this course will be beneficial for you to travel, study and work in Japan or for Japanese companies. Learning Japanese also makes you more employable in a globallsed economy.
