CCDS Wins Prestigious AI Award for Revolutionising Medical Quality Control
The College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS) proudly congratulates Associate Professor Yu Han and Dr. Liu Zelei for receiving the Innovative Application of AI Award from AAAI 2025. This esteemed recognition highlights their outstanding contributions to AI-driven medical quality control.
Pioneering AI for Healthcare Excellence
Their award-winning project, IMQC: A Large Language Model Platform for Medical Quality Control, represents a major leap in enhancing healthcare efficiency. In collaboration with East China University of Science and Technology and China Unicom (Shanghai), the team developed IMQC, an AI-powered system that automates the computation of Medical Quality Control (MQC) indicators—key metrics for evaluating hospital performance and ensuring high-quality patient care.
By leveraging a large language model (LLM), IMQC translates MQC indicators into a standardized format and processes electronic medical records (EMRs) with exceptional speed and precision. This innovation replaces traditional manual assessments, streamlining healthcare quality evaluations.
Real-World Impact and Global Implications
Since its deployment in February 2024, IMQC has been adopted by the Shanghai Medical Quality Management Centre and 57 hospitals. The platform has successfully processed 1,245 MQC indicators for secondary- and tertiary-level hospitals, achieving an evaluation accuracy of 93.31%, on par with human experts.
IMQC has transformed efficiency - what once required human experts to analyze 10 EMRs per hour can now be done at a rate of over 1,000 EMRs per hour using a single H800 GPU. This has led to estimated manpower cost savings of 3.42 million RMB per month, demonstrating the immense value of AI in medical quality control.
A Testament to CCDS Leadership in AI Research
This remarkable achievement underscores CCDS’s leadership in cutting-edge AI research with real-world applications. The success of IMQC sets a powerful precedent for the adoption of AI in global healthcare systems, reinforcing NTU’s role in shaping the future of AI-driven innovation.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to A/P Yu Han and Dr. Liu Zelei for their groundbreaking contributions to the field. Their work exemplifies the spirit of excellence and innovation that defines CCDS.
