Experts Say Teachers Can Never Be Replaced By AI, But Their Role Will Change

Moderated by Professor Luke Ong, Vice President for AI and Digital Economy and Dean of the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS); the panel included Tencent co-founder and philanthropist Dr. Charles Chen Yidan, and experts like Professor Ong Yew Soon, President's Chair Professor of Computer Science at CCDS; Professor Liu Woon Chia, Director of the National Institute of Education (NIE); and Dr. Ho Shen Yong, Executive Director of the Institute of Pedagogical Innovation, Research, and Excellence (InsPIRE). |
They tackled critical questions about AI's role in the classroom, specifically whether it could replace teachers and how it might reshape educational practices. The consensus was clear: generative AI should enhance teaching rather than replace educators. The panellists emphasised the evolution of the educator’s role to that of facilitators of learning instead of transmitters of knowledge.
The conversation also highlighted the current state of AI tools available for educational use and the challenges educators face in effectively integrating these technologies. The panel underscored the need for robust teacher training programmes that incorporate AI while addressing issues like equity in education. NIE Director, Professor Liu said that teacher training goes beyond the preparatory stage. She added that continuous professional education (CPE) is key to ensuring that educators are equipped with the right skills to navigate AI enhanced teaching and learning. This engaging discussion followed a significant announcement in which the Chen Yidan Foundation, which pledged a S$6 million gift to NTU to establish the Yidan Professorship in AI.
