The School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) was established 34 years ago in November 1988 as the School of Applied Science offering bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology, the first degree in computer studies in Singapore. As a relatively young school, today SCSE has developed into a prominent computing department in the world and has consistently been ranked in the top for computer science and engineering. In 2022, we are ranked as No. 4 for Computer Science in the world by the latest US News and World Report Best Global Universities (climbed by 3 spots from #7 in 2020). For QS World University Rankings (Computer Science and Information Systems), SCSE has climbed 9 spots from 20th to 11th in the last 5 years.

Forbes has named our BSc. Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) programme in the ‘10 Best AI and Data Science Undergraduate Courses For 2021’ list. SCSE had launched the DSAI in 2018, one of the first undergraduate degrees in AI in the world.

SCSE has established itself at the forefront of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution in a rather short time. For research impact, NTU has been ranked 3rd globally in terms of citation impact of its AI publications in 2017 by Times Higher Education; and was second only to Microsoft in number of publication citations in Nov 2017 by the Nikkei Asian Review.

SCSE is proud to also host 4 top global young AI researchers named by the IEEE ‘Al’s 10 to Watch: The Future of Al’ in 2018 and in 2020. In 2021, 26 faculty (~32%) from the School have been listed in Stanford University’s Top 2% Scientists’ study and 3 esteemed faculty members are listed as ‘Highly Cited Researchers 2022’ by Clarivate Analysis. Of the world’s scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers truly are one in 1,000. These pioneers in their fields represent the most influential researchers who have published multiple papers frequently cited by their peers that rank in the top 1% of citations for field and year in the Web of Science.
