Introduction to PPVC (Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction)
Webinar: lecture by China Construction on 8 September 2021
In collaboration with A/P Robert Tiong, CEE, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), China Construction (SP) Dev Co Pte Ltd (CCDC) conducted an online sharing session on 8 September 2021. The main topic of the lecture was about the introduction to China Construction’s PPVC Construction, sharing actual construction experience from the perspective of a main contractor and how it has helped the Company to be one of the pioneers in PPVC construction in Singapore and to be recognized as one of Singapore’s top-quality builders in the construction industry.
The participants of the above seminar included undergraduatew from CEE, Dr. Robert Tiong (Associate Professor of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of NTU), Ms. Tan Hwee Hoon (CCDC HR Director) also attended the seminar, and she also expressed her invitation for NTU students to join CCDC after graduation. Mr. Anthony Kang, Senior Project Manager of CCDC, shared on the design, production, actual construction and installation of the PPVC modules at the factory and actual construction site using ongoing project Stirling Residences as a reference. The seminar was hosted by Mr. Sheng Yu Kun, the head of CCDC's Engineering Technology Department.
At the start of the presentation, Mr Anthony Kang, Senior Project Manager of CCDC who formerly graduated from NTU and was once taught by Dr. Robert Tiong, expressed his gratitude to NTU as an alma mater and sincerely invited the NTU students to join the construction industry after graduation. For the actual presentation on PPVC, Anthony Kang clearly illustrated the benefits of PPVC construction technology which increases the work productivity and thereby reducing the manpower required and improve the Quality and Safety onsite. Relevant stringent QA/QC control involving CCDC Corporate QA/QC Department’s progress quality assessment system (PDAS) which serves as the backbone of the audit check to ensure the in-process and completed works for structural, architectural & M&E works met the required quality standard based on BCA quality guidelines and tolerances. Safety measures together with the unique challenges encountered for PPVC construction were also presented.
Another salient point stressed during the online lecture was that a video on the actual installation process of PPVC module onsite was shown to all to clearly illustrate the QAQC control and Safety measures taken to ensure each of the 3,500 no. of PPVC modules are accurately and safely installed onsite.
During the Q&A session, NTU students spontaneously made some queries with relate to some of the challenges encountered for PPVC construction and some logistic involved in the transportation and tracking of the PPVC modules. Mr. Sheng Yu Kun also sincerely extended the invitation to NTU students for actual visit to CCDC’s factory to see the actual PPVC production works.
Towards the end of presentation, Dr Robert Tiong expressed his appreciation to CCDC for conducting the seminar and was glad that NTU Civil graduates such as Anthony Kang continue to thrive in the construction industry; he added that through this platform of technical and actual PPVC construction experience sharing, student participants were able to gain valuable insights of the actual PPVC technology being implemented in real life project and opportunity to understand the actual process of construction. He hoped to maintain a constant and interactive relationship with industry partners such as CCDC and looked forward to more collaboration in the future such as using CCDC projects as a platform for its research and trial in Logistic & Transportation Software for PPVC.On the afternoon of July 21st, China Construction (South Pacific) presented a virtual lecture themed “Digitalization & Integrated Digital Delivery,” which also doubled as an online exchange event between the company and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
A total of 55 undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of NTU as well as new employees from China Construction (South Pacific) who graduated in the past few years participated in this event.
