Thanks a million, Von

The award-winning developer may be building internationally-lauded landmarks, but Von Lee (CEE/1995) still finds the time to establish a bursary fund for financially needy students at his alma mater.

The ever-evolving Singapore skyline has seen a surge in iconic landmarks in the past decade, including the 12 majestic Supertrees at Supertree Grove in Gardens by the Bay.

These towering Supertrees are the brainchild of Von Lee Yong Miang (CEE/1995), Founder and Executive Chairman of home-grown building construction company Expand Construction Pte Ltd, which was founded in 2000.

With a desire to build something less tangible than a Supertree, yet possibly even more rewarding, the award-winning developer has set his sights on growing human talent – specifically ambitious, young engineers – to help fertilise the field that has led to his continued success.

By donating S$1 million to NTU in 2016 to establish the Von Lee Yong Miang Bursary Fund, Von has made it possible for NTU to fund up to 10 financially needy students per academic year in any engineering field of study, providing each student with a stipend of S$10,000. With matching, the total endowment is S$2.5 million.

“I recalled how in my earlier years I had also benefited from the University and the many helping hands which helped me during my financially constrained years,” he shared.

“This motivated me to establish this bursary to help a lot more undergraduates access the quintessential tertiary education so that they will be able to focus on their academic achievement. Eventually, the recipients can likewise contribute to and serve society.”
