Master of Science by Coursework


Programme Overview and Admission Requirement
The Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering is offered in NTU and is intended to equip students with the latest postgraduate level knowledge in materials science and engineering. This programme will use the latest online learning tools and the students can select any combination of these courses [with conventional face-to-face courses available] to make up to 30 AUs through the wide selection of courses offered in the curriculum.

The students must fulfil a minimum 30 academic units (AUs) and attain a minimum CGPA of 2.5, which will then subsequently lead to a Master of Science degree.

Admission Criteria
Have a good Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent in a related discipline.

Good polytechnic qualifications in materials science and engineering or closely related major with a substantial number of years of relevant work experience.

For applicants whose native language is not English, TOEFL/IELTS score is to be submitted with the application for admission.

Applicants without TOEFL/IELTS would still be eligible to apply, but they may be subjected to an interview/test if deemed necessary by the School. GRE is not required for MSc programme (by coursework).

We emphasize that the selection process is competitive. Meeting all prior requirements does not guarantee selection. All applicants will be holistically evaluated academically, relevancy of work experience and other relevant experiences.

There are two intakes each year – January and August.

Government subsidy is no longer available for Coursework Programme. Students will be liable for full tuition fees.

For international students, the required amount of the living expenses is estimated at S$18,000 per year, in addition to the tuition and miscellaneous student fees.

A student who withdraws or leaves the University two or more weeks after the commencement of his candidature or the commencement of the semester is liable to pay the fees due for the semester.

Master of Science Scholarships

You are eligible for Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering scholarship if you are a local or international student seeking admission as a full-time candidate pursuing a Master of Science programme at NTU. The maximum duration of the award is one year. The scholarships are renewable per semester, subject to satisfactory progress. Renewal of scholarship is subject to satisfactory periodic review. The scholarship will be terminated if the candidate is issued a warning or placed on probation. 


There is no bond attached to the scholarship.

The scholarship provides for:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly stipend

Interested candidates should indicate their interest as a separate sheet in their application for admission. You may also indicate any research experience you may have or any paper(s) that you may have published over the last 5 years and any awards or achievements to support the application for scholarship.

Successful candidates will be informed on the outcome of their application together with the offer of admissions via email. 

They are required to observe the terms and conditions for the award of the Scholarship.

New matriculated students may access e-services (including Course Registration) after they have been matriculated and when the course registration starts. 

You may add or drop courses during the Add/Drop period, within in the first two weeks of the semester. Any changes after the Add/Drop period will not be accepted. 

All students are advised to check via their GSLink before the end of the Add/Drop period to ensure courses have been registered / de-registered correctly.

If you wish to withdraw from any courses, you must submit your request to the school by the 10th week of the semester, otherwise a 'Fail' grade will be reflected in your transcript. If the withdrawal request is approved, 'W' grade will be reflected in the course result and transcript for the withdrawal course. In this case, the student is still liable for the tuition fee for the withdrawal course.

Please note that there is a maximum credits for course registration allowed per semester:

  • Full time M.Sc. student could take maximum 15AUs of courses in each semester.
  • Part time M.Sc. student could take maximum 9AUs of courses in each semester.
Graduation Requirements:
To be awarded the Master in Materials Science and Engineering degree, student must complete a total of 30 AUs and attain a minimum CGPA of 2.50 at the completion of the programme of study.

Satisfactory Academic Performance
In any term of study, a coursework student is considered to be making satisfactory progress if he attains a minimum TGPA of 2.50.

Poor Academic Performance

A coursework student with poor academic performance will be subjected to the following actions:

  • Academic warning if TGPA < 2.50 in any term of study
  • Termination of Candidature if TGPA < 2.50 for the second consecutive term of study.
