ELL’s participation at Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée (AILA) World Congress 2024

English Language and Literature (ELL) Department recently had the unique opportunity to be part of the 2024 Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée (AILA) World Congress, marking its 60th anniversary. This milestone event brought together leading scholars and practitioners in the field of applied linguistics from around the globe. 24 of our faculty and 14 of our postgraduate students (past & present) had the chance to present innovative research, covering a wide range of topics. ELL department’s participation at AILA 2024 was marked by several impactful symposia. We explored key issues in professional growth through our Symposium on “Perspectives on Professional Development in English Language Teaching”, delved into the transformative role of technology in our Symposium on “Digital Literacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Concepts, Practices, and Pedagogies,” and examined innovative strategies in our Symposium on “Literacy Developments for a Global Age: Perspectives on the Teaching of English in Singapore Schools.” These sessions underscored our commitment to addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities in language education.

AILA was more than just an academic gathering—it was a bonding experience for our department. We supported each other by attending presentations, sharing meals, and participating in social activities, which allowed us to connect on a personal level beyond the confines of our usual workplace. A memorable highlight was the department dinner, where we joyfully reunited with former colleagues and engaged in enriching conversations with our graduate students. Exploring the neighbouring country together brought us closer, fostering a strong sense of community that we carry back with us, along with renewed inspiration for our teaching and research endeavours.
