Introduction

This course is an overview of issues and concerns seminal to ventures in the world of literary publishing, in particular the three writing genres of fiction, memoir, and poetry. Do you have a writing portfolio you hope to approach prospective publishers with? How does a writer navigate the complex arena of literary presses? This course approaches publishing from an author’s perspective, in regard to understanding each literary genre’s particularities, studying established voices, developing strategies for achieving personal publication goals, and surveying available markets and opportunities.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

- Demonstrate an awareness of literary publishing in specific writing genres.

- Demonstrate an appreciation of creative aspects of specific literary genres. 

- Develop the ability to apply humanities research and research methods to the creative industries.

-   Develop an appreciation of the particularity, diversity and range of opportunities from both a theoretical and practical perspective. 

Develop an appreciation of the cultural and social contexts that influence contemporary publishing.

Mr Desmond Kon

Trained in book publishing at Stanford University, Desmond studied sociology and mass communication at the National University of Singapore, and later received his theology masters (world religions) from Harvard University and fine arts masters (creative writing) from the University of Notre Dame. Desmond has taught writing and publishing for over two decades, his contributions recognised with the Hiew Siew Nam Distinguished Academic Award, and four teaching excellence awards. https://www.desmondkon.com/
