Introduction
This course offers an introduction to key considerations in interpreting and designing evaluation studies in the educational context. Through considering the purposes of evaluations and exploring the nature of major evaluation approaches, participants will develop understanding of the key aspects of designing evaluation studies. The primary assessment project for all students will be to design (but not conduct) an evaluation for a curricular programme, project or product.
- Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching
Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Curriculum and Teaching (12 AU):
- MCT902 Crafting the Curriculum
- MCT921 Theory and Practice of Authentic Assessment
- One of the following electives:
- MCT904 Understanding Teachers and Teaching: Theory and Practice
- MCT912 Curriculum and Programme Evaluation
- MCT913 Differentiating Curriculum and Teaching for Diverse Learners
- MCT935 New Media and 21st Century Learning
Upon completion of the fourth course, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Curriculum and Teaching (16 AU).

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Define and use key terminology, concepts and jargon related to the field and practice of curriculum evaluation
- Craft and defend a rationale for evaluation (i.e., why evaluate?)
- Discuss situations for which various major curriculum evaluation approaches would be appropriate to employ
- Design a curriculum evaluation plan in an educational setting based on the appropriate applications of evaluation approaches and methods
- Generate for the plan suitable data collection methods
- Appreciate the complexity of evaluation work from both efficacy and ethical perspectives
To meet the requirement of SkillsFuture Singapore, assessment(s) will be conducted during every course. The assessment(s) include:
- Individual Reflection
- Individual Project
- Student-led seminar (Group)
This course is recommended for practitioners or leaders who are involved in teaching and curriculum design activities from industries such as education, social work, nursing, and public sectors and who are tasked to design and implement the evaluation of a program/curriculum/intervention/services for improvement and accountability purposes. Prior knowledge or experience in research methodology (e.g., understanding the general process of research, the concepts of quantitative and qualitative methodology, different data collection methods) will be an advantage.
