Introduction
This course aims to provide participants with a sound grasp of the theoretical underpinnings of authentic assessments as well as practical skills needed for designing authentic assessments. More specifically, it aims to provide participants with 1) conceptual clarity on "authenticity"; 2) principles for designing quality authentic assessments; 3) a critical perspective of the role of authentic assessment within Singapore's educational system. The course will be conducted through discussions, group presentations, online forums, and hands-on activities. Participants are expected to critically appraise literature on authentic assessments and to develop an authentic assessment that will enhance the learning of their students.
- Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching
Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Curriculum and Teaching (12 AU):
- MCT902 Crafting the Curriculum
- MCT921 Theory and Practice of Authentic Assessment
- One of the following electives:
- MCT904 Understanding Teachers and Teaching: Theory and Practice
- MCT912 Curriculum and Programme Evaluation
- MCT913 Differentiating Curriculum and Teaching for Diverse Learners
- MCT935 New Media and 21st Century Learning
Upon completion of the fourth course, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Curriculum and Teaching (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- articulate conceptual and theoretical knowledge about authentic assessment
- critique journal articles on authentic assessment
- critique examples of authentic assessments and their rubrics currently in use
- apply authentic assessment task design and rubric development
To meet the requirement of SkillsFuture Singapore, assessment(s) will be conducted during every course. The assessment(s) include:
- Literature Reviews
- Group-led Class Discussions
- Individual Final Paper
- Class Participation
This course is recommended for working professionals in the education/training industry who would like to upskill their knowledge or for those who intend to work in the education/training industry. Prior knowledge in assessment will be an advantage.
It is preferred that participants have at least two years of experience in teaching or professional experience in educational contexts. It would be ideal that the participants have relevant qualification (e.g., a teaching qualification such as the NIE’s Postgraduate Diploma in Education or equivalent portfolio of professional learning certification/diploma in education practice).
