Introduction

This course covers the non-cognitive aspects of educational  assessment. Non-cognitive attributes such as attitudes, interests, and personality are important to education for the 21st century. The course  complements those of cognitive assessments, to provide the breadth of knowledge for a MEd (Educational Assessment) specialist.

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Learning and Development
- FlexiMasters in Learning and Development

Learners need to complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Learning and Development (12 AU). 
  • MDP904 Motivation, Volition and Learning in-Action
  • MDP907 How to Nurture Creative and Happy Learners (OR DP907A-C)**
  • One of the following courses:
    • MDP909 Assessment and Development of 21st Century Competencies (OR DP909A-C)**
    • MDP906 Personality and Attitude Assessment

Upon completion of all courses, learners will fulfill the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Learning and Development (16 AU).

**Learners have to complete the entire set of modularised courses to be considered as completing one course.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
• clarify the principles of affective measurement and assessment, and introduces psychological scaling methods
• provide the knowledge and understanding to select published psychological scales, or to adapt or construct affective
measures relevant to their research • engage the students in the development of an attitude scale.
1. Nature of psychological measurements.
2. Comparing and contrasting cognitive and non-cognitive assessments.
3. Basic concepts in non-cognitive measurements.
4. Measurement errors and biases (e.g. social desirability, response sets).
5. Development of a non-cognitive measure (attitude scale as a heuristic example).
6. Statistics in psychological scale construction.
7. Establishing reliability and validity.
8. Guttman scalogram, Thurstone scaling, Osgood semantic differential, Likert scaling for attitude measurement.
9. Personality assessment e.g. 16PF, EPI, MBTI
10. Ethical considerations.
11. Reporting psychological results.


A teaching qualification such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education or at least one year of work experience in education.
