Introduction

This course explores how the human body responds to acute and chronic physiological demands of sports and exercise. The module will cover energy systems, cardiovascular and respiratory regulation, skeletal muscle physiology and aspects of environmental effects on sports and exercise performance. An integrative approach is adopted to link between basic theories and applied concepts in real life situations. A key focus will be on how research and the underlying exercise physiology principles are relevant to the practitioner. Common assessment techniques with practical applications in sports and exercise physiology will be discussed.

Students will perform laboratory work using state-of-the-art equipment, alongside lectures and tutorials. A mix of face-to-face interactions, online learning and group work is implemented in this module. It is intended that students be guided to holistically integrate the knowledge presented throughout the module.

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Physical Activity and Health
FlexiMasters in Physical Activity and Health

Learners need to complete any 3 of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Physical Activity and Health (12 AU). Upon completion of all courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Physical Activity and Health (16 AU).

• MES906 Exercise Physiology
• MES910 Physical Activity, Nutrition & Health
• MES911 Psychology of Physical Activity
• MES912 Sports Injuries - Understanding, Prevention and Management

Learners will be equipped with an advanced level of understanding of exercise physiology with an emphasis on applying the theories and research findings to enhance athletic performance, general well-being and health.

At the end of the course, learners will be able to demonstrate understanding of the following concepts and applying the theories and research findings to enhance athletic performance, general well-being and health, through written assignment and verbal presentation:
• energy system contribution to high intensity exercise
• predictors of performance
• the metabolic processes which are anaerobic ("without oxygen"), and aerobic ("with oxygen")
• the influence of maximal oxygen uptake on endurance performance
• other factors that also influence endurance performance
• lactate/ventilatory threshold and use in predicting endurance performance
• nutrition and weight loss

Topics covered would include:

  • Bioenergetics Exercise metabolism
  • Hormonal regulation and responses to exercise
  • Skeletal muscle structure and function
  • Nervous system structure and control of movement
  • Cardiovascular system and circulatory responses to exercise
  • Respiratory system and responses to exercise
  • Temperature regulation during exercise and hydration Ergogenic aids
For the information of MOE officers:
SFEd Area of Practice: Inquiry-based Learning
SFEd Level of Practice: Accomplished

This course is recommended for working professionals in the sports and fitness, and healthcare industry who would like to upskill their knowledge or for those who intend to work in the sports and fitness and healthcare industry. Prior knowledge in exercise and sport science will be an advantage.
