Introduction

In addition to good teaching, what makes an effective teacher is the possession of an inherent ability to understand what motivates students to learn and why. This course introduces participants to the latest theories, research and applications of motivation and engagement in learning and teaching. Participants will first be introduced to the concept of motivation and the various approaches to motivational studies, namely the behaviourist, humanistic, cognitivist and socio-cultural perspectives. They will explore the factors influencing learner motivation, and the reasons why some learners are more motivated than others. Finally, they will have the opportunity to develop and apply the skills, knowledge and strategies needed to enhance their students’, children’s or employees’ motivation to learn.

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices (12 AU):

  • MTC902 Designing Curriculum: Theory and Practice (or MTC902A-C)
  • MTC903 Assessment for Learning: Theory and Practice (or MTC903A-C)
  • MTC904 Facilitating Learning in the Digital Age (or MTC904A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth course, MTC901 Nurturing Learners and Learning (or MTC901A-C), learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices (16 AU).

Through this course participants will:

1. Describe and relate the concept of motivation to their context of teaching and learning.
2. Develop a systemic perspective and approach in understanding the issues and factors influencing student motivation and engagement in learning.
3. Develop an understanding of motivational theories in order to promote learning and achievement.
4. Translate and apply the motivational theories to enhance learner motivation in their teaching/learning contexts..

To meet the requirement of SkillsFuture Singapore, assessment(s) will be conducted during every course. The assessment(s) include:

  • Group Project
  • Individual Reflection Paper
  • Individual E-Learning Participation
