Introduction

The module will focus on the history of Tamil language and Literature teaching over the past 3 centuries. The course will provide an overview of the evolution of Education to deepen students' awareness on Tamil education in Singapore. The module aims to ultimately enable students to adopt strategies for 21st century teaching and learning.

This course is mutually exclusive to MLT907A-C.

 

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education
- FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education

Learners must complete any of the following three courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education (12 AU):

  • MTL901 Tamil Curriculum, Materials including IT: Selection and Evaluation (or MTL901A-C)
  • MTL903 Tamil Language in Education (or MTL903A-C)
  • MTL907 History of Singapore Tamil Education and Tamil Literature (or MTL907A-C)
  • MTL908 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Tamil (or MTL908A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the rich history and journey of teaching of Tamil Language and Literature in Singapore
  2. Comprehend the difficulties / challenges faced to sustain teaching of Tamil Language and Literature
  3. Critical assessment: Assess the teaching and learning of Tamil Language and Literature in the previous years
  4. Use the knowledge gained for Teaching Tamil Language and Literature suited for 21st century learning

  1. Singapore's education landscape (18th to 21st Century)
  2. Tamil vernacular schools under various governance
  3. Education Report: Impact of Goh Keng Swee Report
  4. Tamil Schools and Umar Pulavar Tamil High School
  5. National Bilingual Education Policies
  6. Issues: Use of overseas textbook and learning resources for Tamil Literature
  7. Textbook creation development – CDIS, CPPD MOE and Teaching resources in Singapore
  8. Tamil Language and Literature Education Reviews and Curriculum Development- SINDA(1996), TLCPRC(2005), NIE Curriculum Review(2006), Mother Tongue Languages Report(2011)
  9. Teacher training and teacher upgrading

Working professionals with background and or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents:

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
