• Taking Care of Mental Health: prevention, early intervention, and self-management strategies for mental wellbeing
• Psychological First Aid (in collaboration with the Singapore Red Cross): addressing the intersection of physical and emotional health
• Supporting Caregivers through Coaching: enhancing self-care, communication, resource navigation, and supportive networking to mitigate caregiver burnout and foster resilient caregiver-recipient relationships.
At the end of the 6-day programme, learners will be well-equipped to apply essential health coaching techniques, ensuring they are prepared to support the health and wellbeing of older adults effectively.

The "Health Coaching for Older Adults" training programme is a landmark initiative born from a three-year (2018-2020) research initiative led by Professor Theng Yin Leng. This foundational 2-day programme lays the groundwork for a comprehensive understanding of the unique needs and challenges of this population, and is designed to equip link workers, volunteers, and caregivers with the skills to support older adults in managing chronic conditions, enhancing their overall wellbeing, and achieving sustainable behavioural change through motivational interviewing techniques. Learn the core principles of health coaching, effective communication strategies, and essential skills to support older adults in adopting healthy habits, overcoming barriers to change, and achieving optimal health outcomes. This programme sets the stage as a foundation to the Health Coaching Techniques programme, setting you on a path to become a qualified health coach and make a meaningful impact in the lives of older adults. Upon completing the course, learners will acquire the following knowledge and skills:

Prof Theng Yin LengExecutive Director, Ageing Research Institute for Society and Education (ARISE) Prof Theng specializes in user-centred design, interaction design, and usability engineering. Since returning to Singapore over the past 20 years, she has secured research grants totalling over $13 million as a Principal Investigator (PI). These grants, awarded by A*Star, MOH, and NRF, support projects in telehealth, patient care, elderly care, and technologies. Dr. Theng has been involved in numerous research projects as a PI, Co-I, and collaborator, and she has more than 200 publications published widely in international journals and conferences. Prof Theng is also the Lead PI for the curriculum design, that offers the 2-day Health Coaching for Older Adults training which is offered by NTU Academy for Professional and Continuing Education (NTU PACE), since March 2021. |
Dr Cao Yuan YuanDr Cao Yuanyuan is a Research Fellow from Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) and an affiliated researcher of the Ageing Research Institute for Society and Education (ARISE), Nanyang Technological University. With a PhD in Communication Studies, Media Law and Policy from WKWSCI, NTU, Dr Cao has successfully completed several innovative research projects on eldercare and health coaching. Having done research in health coaching for years, Dr Cao firmly believes that health coaching can bridge the gap between what people want to become and what they achieve through behaviour changes. She has been actively involved in designing and updating the health coaching curriculum and coaches the "Exercise and Fitness" module in this program. |
Ms H. Falina (Lin)MSc SWD, ACLP Assistant Director, Ageing Research Institute for Society and Education (ARISE) Falina holds a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and International Business, as well as a Master's degree in Skills and Workforce Development. She has extensive and diverse working experience of more than 30 years, both in Singapore and overseas, including working with older adults. She possesses the ability and skills to train, communicate, manage, motivate, and inspire people of different levels, ethnicities, and backgrounds. With strong analytical and result-oriented leadership skills, backed by organizational oversight, her desire is to share her knowledge and skills in a new environment. Her passion is to motivate and encourage others to enhance and reskill their talents towards a progressive career path, with a healthy mindset. Falina leads the curriculum development team in the Advanced Health Coaching modules head by Prof Theng Yin Leng, Executive Director of Ageing Research Institute for Society and Education, coordinating with different faculty members and schools, and in collaboration with the NTU Academy for Professional and Continuing Education (NTU PACE).

Assoc Prof Ho Moon-Ho RingoDeputy Director, Ageing Research Institute for Society and Education (ARISE) Dr. Ho specializes in quantitative and applied psychology, with a focus on multivariate data analytic methods such as multilevel analysis and structural equation modelling. His research interests include aging research, career aspirations, attitudes and orientations, and lifelong career mindsets and development in the 21st century. He has contributed over 80 journal papers and book chapters in clinical, health, organizational, vocational psychology, and applied statistics. Currently, Dr. Ho and his collaborators are engaged in research projects related to exergaming for intergenerational bonding, frailty screening in the community, and skillset mapping for current and future seniors. His research is closely connected to the local context, as evidenced by his collaborations with organizations such as NHG, NTUitive, SPRING, PA, and MSF. |
Assistant Professor Paul Victor PatinadanAssistant Professor, School of Social Sciences Dr Paul Victor Patinadan is an accomplished academic with close to a decade of research experience in the field of health and wellbeing. He received his PhD in Psychology right here at NTU. Paul is also an Association for Death Education and Counselling (ADEC) certified Thanatologist and plays an active role in the Action Research for Community Health (ARCH) Lab NTU. |
