Projects not requiring IACUC approval
Research or teaching protocols involving the use of animals (i.e. live fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, non-human mammals and cephalopods) require NTU-IACUC approval before work on these projects can commence. As a general guide, when the embryos and foetuses of these animals are at the developmental stage where they begin to feel pain, they also require IACUC approval. Refer to the guidelines on Animal work that requires IACUC approval for more information.
There are however, certain categories of projects that do not require prior NTU-IACUC approval and these are listed here for reference. If you are unsure about the approval requirement for your project, please contact the IACUC Secretariat.
- Observational field studies that do not involve any type of interaction with animals and/or manipulation of the environment (e.g., presenting baits/models/audio playback). For more info on field studies, click here.
- Those that involve commercially obtained animal tissues. If animal tissue samples are obtained from research entities, the PI must provide evidence of an approved IACUC protocol in place for the use of animals from which tissues were harvested.
- Those that involve the use of animal cells, but not obtained from live animals.
- Those involving the use of invertebrates such as snails, lobsters, starfish and insects, excluding Cephalopods.
