NTU-CEE Distinguished Engineer Seminar Series: Prof. Zhu Hehua

Organized By
CEE Seminar Committee
Host By
Associate Professor Wu Wei
Topic
From Human Wisdom to Engineering system Wisdom
About the Seminar
Engineering systems are human creations, and according to First Principles, their wisdom originates from the transfer and mapping of human wisdom. Since wisdom represents the highest quality pursued by humans, it also serves as the ultimate goal in the development of engineering systems. From philosophical and psychological perspectives, human wisdom can be categorized into two dimensions: "ability" and "virtue". Traits such as "self-awareness and self-regulation" and "the pursuit of common interests" can be incorporated into engineering systems. Consequently, the essence of contemporary engineering systems can be distilled into four core attributes: resilience, intelligence, sustainability, and humanism.
Based on the theory of complex systems science and engineering practice, this lecture introduces the foundational model for wise engineering systems. Relying on the iS3(infrastructure Smart Service System) digital base, it establishes a new paradigm for their development, systematically establishes a hierarchical evaluation system for wise tunnels and wise transportations, and validates its effectiveness and feasibility through specific engineering examples.
About the Speaker
Dr. Zhu Hehua holds the position of Distinguished Professor in Geotechnical Engineering at Tongji University, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering. Dr. Zhu, in collaboration with Prof. Zhang Lianyang , developed the generalized 3D Hoek-Brown rock strength criterion, also known as the Generalized Zhang-Zhu rock strength criterion (GZZ).
This criterion has been recommended as a standard by the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM). His contributions to the field have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Humboldt Research Prize in 2015 and the T.H.H. medal at ICCES’13 in 2013.
