Congratulations to Professor Yang Yaowen on his promotion to Full Professor with the title "Professor of Structural Engineering"!
Professor Yang Yaowen holds a Master of Engineering degree in Computational Mechanics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China in 1992 and a PhD degree in Structural Engineering from NTU in 2001. He also has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Engineering Mechanics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China in 1989. He was an Assistant Lecturer/Lecturer at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (1992-1997) in China and a Research Engineer, ASM Technology Pte Ltd in Singapore (2000-2001).
Professor Yang was a Deputy Director for Protective Technology Research Centre (PTRC) at NTU, currently an Associate Chair (Academic) at School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), a member of NTU Teaching Council and a member of NTU Senate.
Professor Yang has over 20 years of research experience in structural mechanics, smart materials and structures. His current research in infrastructural system capitalizes on the collective innovative application of small energy harvesting, structural health monitoring and uncertainty analysis of structural systems. Professor Yang has strongly exhibited the qualities of a competent leader who is able to foresee the research opportunities and potentials in piezoelectric energy harvesting. He successfully led and motivated his research team through a competitive and challenging path to attain achievements. Professor Yang is highly regarded for his pioneering work in the important area of small energy harvesting which attracts world-wide attention. His extensive contributions in the field of piezoelectric energy harvesting led to NTU’s global recognition as a leading centre in the area of piezoelectric energy harvesting. He has also established prominently his world leading position in this area.
Professor Yang has been invited to deliver several keynote lectures and presentations at international conferences and overseas universities. Noteworthy, Professor Yang was one of the few awardees of a travel grant by Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG), USA, to give talks on broadband energy harvesting and structural health monitoring at the University of Michigan (UM) in 2012.
Professor Yang has been constantly striving for teaching excellence, consistently achieving high teaching scores. His dedication in education has won him the Nanyang Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009.
