Enterprise Singapore and MPA of Singapore to develop standards for ammonia fuel refueling in Singapore
Reported by Lianhe Zaobao, Enterprise Singapore and the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will develop standards for ammonia bunkering for Singapore this year to support the development of related businesses. Latest data show that Singapore’s alternative fuel sales in 2024 exceeded 1 million metric tons for the first time, reaching 1.34 million metric tons, doubling year-on-year.
When interviewed, NTU School of Civil & Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Yuen Kum Fai said the growth in sales of alternative fuels, coupled with the country's pioneering use of ammonia as a marine fuel, underscores Singapore's leadership in sustainable maritime innovation.
He said: "Setting standards for new fuels such as ammonia and methanol is an important step towards Singapore's decarbonisation goals. Adding that Singapore's active development of green and digital shipping corridors is also in line with international sustainability goals."
