Minister’s Innovation Award 2024 (Merit): NextGen Robust Foundation System @ Tuas Port
Congratulations to Professor Chu Jian, Associate Professor Wu Wei, Dr. Wu Shifan, and Dr. Chen Hao on receiving the Minister’s Innovation Award 2024 (Merit) for their outstanding contributions to the NextGen Robust Foundation System @ Tuas Port.
To develop an efficient foundation system, the improved design leverages the load transfer platform and rigid inclusion columns to maximise the soil arching effect. The key advantages compared to previous designs include significant cost savings in construction, easier demolition, reduced construction time, and greater environmental sustainability.
As part of the project, the "Guideline for Rigid Inclusion Foundation System for Container Yards” was developed and is supported by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) for real-world application not only in future port construction works but also in other civil engineering and structural building projects.
Major innovations in the proposed project include:
First-ever application of the load transfer platform concept used for the foundation of containers.
First global proposed full-scale pilot test in simulating actual containers. The findings of the study enhanced foundation design, provided valuable data for verifying and validating design numerical modelling, while also supporting future construction innovations.
