Shaping the Future of Sustainable Engineering at the ICE NTU Hackathon 2025

The highly anticipated ICE NTU Hackathon 2025 witnessed the outstanding efforts for raising the bar in sustainable design and engineering among our Civil Engineering and Environmental (CEE) students last month.

Organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) NTU Student Chapter, the event challenged participants to develop innovative and practical solutions addressing the theme of Sustainability in Singapore’s Construction Industry.

Over an intensive half-day session, student teams tackled complex engineering challenges, proposing sustainable strategies for topics such as reducing full-life carbon in high-rise buildings, managing construction waste in Housing & Development Board (HDB) areas, and more.

Students were evaluated on innovation, feasibility, sustainability impact, presentation clarity, and their ability to respond to questions.

The judging panel featured esteemed industry professionals who provided invaluable insights:

  • Mr. Christos Panou, Senior Project Manager, Linesight
  • Ms. Liu Chang, Structural Engineer, Arup Singapore
  • Mr. Stevan Lukic, Founder, Civils.ai
  • Mr. Yin Shan Ho, Singapore Maritime Business Lead, Arup Singapore
  • Dr. Shi Chao, Assistant Professor, NTU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)

Beyond being a competition, the ICE NTU Hackathon 2025 is a platform for future engineers to confront pressing sustainability issues and propose tangible solutions for Singapore’s built environment.

It exemplifies how classroom knowledge can be transformed into real-world impact through teamwork, critical thinking, and a shared commitment to innovation in civil engineering.
