About Us
In 2001, a new research programme on energetic materials was initiated and led by Professor Ang How Ghee in NUS. The laboratory was named as High Energy Density Materials (HEDM) Research Laboratory. In 2005, the research laboratory and programmes were relocated to NTU as the Energetic Materials Research Centre (EMRC) when Prof Ang joined NTU. With the expansion in the research and technology capability of the EMRC, the Centre was upgraded and renamed to Energetics Research Institute (EnRI) in 2008. Prof Ang continued to lead EnRI as the institute’s director until his retirement in December 2016. The current director, Prof Hng Huey Hoon from the School of Materials Science & Engineering, took up the directorship role since January 2017.
As part of an effort to expand the research scope, the research institute was rebranded to Emerging nanoscience Research Institute (EnRI) in May 2020. The new name reflects EnRI's venture into the emerging frontiers in defence science and technology.
Our core capabilities are:
- Advanced materials for formulations
- Modelling on the sensitivity and performance of new and existing materials used in defence
- Development of small scale testing and materials characterisation

To explore new scientific frontiers in emerging advanced materials and associated technologies to enhance national defence.
