First EMB Open Day 2021 Launched to Great Success

On 27 January 2021, LKCMedicine organised the Experimental Medicine Building (EMB) Open Day. The aim of the EMB Open Day is to introduce the School’s state-of-the-art EMB core facilities and platform technologies to the wider research community. The EMB Open Day, which was held online and on-site at the Learning Studio and Seminar Room simultaneously, was fully registered and attracted 65 faculty members and researchers from various NTU schools and healthcare institutions.

Hosted and moderated by Assistant Dean (Research) Associate Professor Kevin Pethe, the event kicked off with opening remarks from NTU’s Senior Vice-President (Research) Professor Lam Khin Yong,  who highlighted the importance of an event such as the EMB Open Day as it encourages interaction leading to interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty as well as staff from different Schools and Departments at NTU. This was followed by remarks from LKCMedicine’s Vice-Dean (Research) Professor Lim Kah Leong who introduced the various facilities available at EMB, and mentioned how LKCMedicine is blessed to enjoy the best of both campuses – the main NTU campus and the Novena campus  – where LKCMedicine has easy access to their pool of research and healthcare collaborators.

Next, in-depth presentations of the following facilities at EMB were shared by the following researchers:

• Zebrafish facility by Prof Philip Ingham & Asst Prof Tom Carney
• LKCMedicine-ICESing Ion Channel Platform (LICP) by Dr Ong Seow Theng
• Singapore Phenome Centre (SPC) by Prof Wang Yulan & Asst Prof Guan Xueli
• NTU Institute of Structural Biology (NISB) by Prof Phan Anh Tuan & Dr Liew Chong Wai
• Cognitive Neuroimaging Centre (CoNIC) by Prof Balazs Gulyas & Dr Vimalan Vijayaragavan
• NTU Optical Bio-Imaging Centre (NOBIC) Research Lab by Prof Peter Török

Overall, the EMB Open Day was well-received with interest in future collaborations with our researchers, and the event ended with a tour of the EMB facilities for registered participants. There are plans for EMB Open Day 2022 to have a stronger focus and deeper involvement with HealthTech NTU, co-led by LKCMedicine’s Associate Professor Yen Choo and School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering’s Professor Chen Peng.
