What We Do
We serve as the master planner strategic coordinator and planner within the defence and security research landscape, orchestrating and planning strategic initiatives across the discipline and entities. In the long term, we aim to influence directives and spearhead NTU's new strategic thrust in the area of defence security research through collaborations and enhance exploration into new discovery areas and novel applications.

Workshops & Discussions
Workshops and discussions are great ways to collate ideas, catalyse brainstorming and share operational needs. Last but not least, they also to increase your network of contacts. Such are assets to foster cooperation and identify opportunities between entities and NTU.
ORTDS has organised workshops and mediated discussions in many shapes and forms, both local and overseas. We aim to
- Ensure sessions are collaborator-centric
- Enhance interdisciplinary collaboration &
- Work towards sustainable development and collaboration
In addition to promotion, facilitation and encouraging participation for the events, ORTDs will be able to identify the relevant NTU participants for such events.
Research Consultations
ORTDS aims to support successful integration of people and ideas together.
Traditionally researchers from different disciplines tend to work in silos. But with progression towards translation research, cooperation between cross-disciplinary research teams and end-users are essential, if not crucial.
Hence discovering solutions often requires talented researchers across several domains connecting to each other to reach a particular objective.
We provide the platform to strengthen this conversation and help connect the dots.
Visits & Seminars
ORTDS has experience and resources in organising a variety of visits and seminars on NTU and NIE campus. We have hosted high-level visitors and technical staff from both local and foreign entities. We have also conducted sessions for various topics, spanning from engineering, to life sciences and soft sciences.
Most importantly, ORTDS will recommend and take into consideration specific requirements relevant to you.
Grant Calls
Collaborators can opt to fund research in 2 ways: competitive and non-competitive.
A non-competitive grant (also known as a direct award) is typically awarded when the collaborator and Faculty are a good match and have found each other. However, the more often than not, a direct award is not easy to come by and only usually happens for mature collaboration relationships.
For a collaborator who is engaging NTU for the first time or is exploring new topics, they may
- have a less targeted motivation
- have no specific faculty in mind, or
- would like to cast a wider net and explore more proposals
If so, competitive grants are of considerable interest to the collaborator. As there are often a lot of planning involved for such activities, it could be overwhelming for first-time funders or it could take a considerable amount of effort.
ORTDS will be able to provide consultation and organise the ‘Grant Calls’ or ‘Request for Proposals’ . We aim to have effective outreach to the vibrant multi-disciplinary NTU and NIE community.
Collaboration Facilitation
In additional to the above, ORTDS's scope of work goes beyond research. We work with the Schools, Departments and Faculties to create, identify and disseminate any opportunities for strategic collaboration, such as talent management, commercialisation and education.
