Modelling and simulation technologies are essential in both scientific research and industrial applications, with diverse and far-reaching uses across sectors such as healthcare and medicine, aerospace, materials science, physics, biology, economics, meteorology, information technology, communications, and beyond.
As the global demand for highly skilled professionals in this field continues to grow, the Master of Science (MSc) in Modelling and Simulation programme at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is specifically designed to meet this increasing need.
This programme provides students with a solid foundation in computational modelling, artificial intelligence, specialised applications, and both research and industrial practices. With this comprehensive training, graduates are well-equipped to pursue doctoral studies or step into high-level roles in the workforce, positioning them for successful careers in a rapidly evolving, high-demand field with vast global opportunities.
The MSc in Modelling and Simulation programme is an intensive one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme by coursework taught in three trimesters per academic year. The courses are delivered in intensive formats of either 7 weeks (with each trimester split into two halves) or a full 13 weeks. All courses are conducted at NTU main campus.
The programme consists of a total of 30 Academic Units (AU), with 15 AU of compulsory courses and 15 AU from elective courses.
Compulsory Courses (15AU) | |
---|---|
Compulsory courses | 15 AU |
Elective Courses (12+3 AU) | |

Prescribed Electives | 12 AU |
Unrestricted Electives | 3 AU |
Total | 30 AU |
The requirements for graduation are:
- Successful completion of the courses of a total of 30 AU as prescribed by MSc in Modelling and Simulation; and
- Attaining a minimum CGPA of 2.50 at the completion of the programme of study.
Programme Features
The curriculum consists of four specialisations:
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Medicine and Healthcare
- Economics and Finance
- Data Science and Computing Engineering
The practicum course, MH6591 Graduate Research Practicum or MH6592 Graduate Professional Internship Practicum, starts in Trimester 3 and students can choose to take either one as their Prescribed Elective.
*Note that students are allowed to choose only up to two courses from the list of MH6548 to MH6551.
Upon graduation, students may claim one specialisation based on the courses they have successfully completed. To do so, students must complete all the prescribed elective courses for their chosen specialisation.
Additionally, prior to the start of the first trimester, students are required to attend a mandatory two-week intensive course, which can be taken either in-person or online. During this course, they will receive a comprehensive review of fundamental concepts in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Complex Analysis, and Differential Equations. This course does not account towards the degree award. However, students must pass a test at the end of the course. If they do not pass, they will need to attend an additional three-hour course to strengthen their fundamental mathematical skills.
Compulsory Courses
Prescribed Elective Courses for Materials Science and Engineering Specialisation
Prescribed Elective Courses for Medicine and Healthcare Specialisation
Prescribed Elective Courses for Economics and Finance Specialisation
Prescribed Elective Courses for Data Science and Computing Engineering Specialisation
Unrestricted Elective Courses
Prescribed Electives of one specialisation can be Unrestricted Electives for another specialisation.
