Emphasis on promoting ‘small and beautiful’ BRI projects; China may cut back spending on overseas BRI projects: Analysts

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday said future Belt and Road Initiative projects will be “small yet beautiful”, signalling a shift in the decade-old initiative. NTU PPGA’s Asst Prof Dylan Loh said that this emphasis may mean that Beijing will be more cautious in selecting its projects in the future and devote resources to more sustainable projects so as to reduce political risk and avoid criticism for contributing to debt distress in developing countries.
