How will the next US president impact ties with Singapore?
NTU Expert Comment: CNA, 5 November 2024
The choice of Kamala Harris or Donald Trump as US president will have implications for Singapore on many fronts. In a studio interview, Prof Joseph Liow, dean at NTU's COHASS, and Assoc Prof John Donaldson from SMU’s School of Social Sciences discussed the potential impact of the US election results on foreign policy. Prof Liow noted that Singapore made strides with the Trump administration in the past, such as enhancing defence cooperation. Still, Trump has signalled that he will significantly alter the dynamics of global trade far more than a Harris administration. Singapore, as a country reliant on global trade, will have to adjust to this. Another issue is that Trump is not big on multilateralism, so it will be a challenge for countries like Singapore that support it if he becomes US president.
