Jalan Kayu SMC may see its first five-cornered fight in 60 years

Following the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report, many opposition parties have expressed interest in contesting the five new constituencies. Red Dot United, the People’s Alliance for Reform, the People’s Power Party, and Workers’ Party may contest the new Jalan Kayu SMC, leading to Singapore’s first five-cornered fight. Red Dot United’s Ravi Philemon said his party would avoid three-way fights so as not to let the ruling party benefit, but NTU’s Assoc Prof Walid Jumblatt Abdullah said multi-way fights are unlikely to significantly impact election outcomes. If a strong opposition party is in a multi-way fight, the smaller opposition parties will lose their election deposit and thus eliminate the problem of vote splitting, he said.
