Research Programmes

Research and development is the key to growth and competitiveness for the university and therefore an integral part of the undergraduate curriculum. To kindle students’ interest in research as well as propagate the research culture on campus, NTU offers the following research opportunities and facilities.

Undergraduate Research Experience in Campus (URECA)

URECA is a university-wide programme initiated to stimulate a culture of research among top undergraduates. It aims to provide undergraduates with a good appreciation of research - its open-endedness, the need for rigour and independence etc, and the approaches towards research problems.

Under URECA, academically outstanding second and third year undergraduates are invited to undertake research from a wide choice of over 800 research projects ranging from engineering, biosciences, communications, business management, accountancy and humanities. Invitations are usually sent out in August each year.

URECA is offered as a 3AU Unrestricted Elective, and is counted towards graduating requirements. The amount of time spent on URECA is about 10 hours per week for a minimum of 8 months within an academic year. Undergraduates who participate in URECA are called NTU President Research Scholars (NTU PRS), and will receive a stipend for their work.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programme (UROP)

Like URECA, UROP provides a research opportunity for second and third year students who wish to consider R&D as one of their career options. It is also administered as a 3AU Unrestricted Elective.

Under the supervision of a professor, students will get the opportunity to experience research and perform tasks such as research literature review, data collection and analysis, modelling and software development. Depending on the School offering it, the programme may be run during the semester or during the Special Term.

UROP is currently available in the following schools:
