Prof ONG Yew Soon
Biography
Professor Ong Yew Soon is the President's Chair Professor of Computer Science at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, within the College of Computing and Data Science. He also serves as the Chief Artificial Intelligence Scientist at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), where he advises the Centre for Frontier AI Research. At NTU, Prof. Ong co-directs the Singtel-NTU Cognitive & Artificial Intelligence Joint Lab and teaches in the recently launched Turing AI Scholar’s Programme, an NTU flagship AI initiative. He is also a Fellow of NTU's Renaissance Engineering Programme, NTU’s flagship engineering programme, and a member of the NTU Teaching Council.
As a dedicated educator, Prof. Ong has received numerous accolades, including the 2023 Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance Award co-organized by UNESCO, the Nanyang Education Awards at the school, college, and university levels in in 2008, 2015, and 2016 respectively, the Passionate Mentor Award from Shell Singapore in 2015, and the Most Popular Lecturer Award in 2009.
Prof. Ong's pioneering work in education, particularly the application of AI to assist children with special needs, has been featured by major media outlets such as CNA, Straits Times, and Today. His innovative use of technology in pedagogy was also highlighted by the Nanyang Chronicle in 2014. And in 2009, he was profiled in Bright Minds Magazine for his efforts in transforming students into future leaders and innovators.
