AIEd@LSA: Initiatives and Innovations

Imagine an educational system where every student enjoys a personalized and meaningful learning experience, empowering them to reach their fullest potential. With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), this vision is coming closer to reality. The faculty at the Learning Sciences and Assessment (LSA) Department have been leading efforts in research and teaching to harness the power of AI in transforming learning and assessment.

In 2023, sensing a need for a more concerted effort, LSA formed an AIEd@LSA taskforce that strategized, designed, and delivered various teacher professional development courses in the meaningful use of AI for learning and assessment. In 2024, the collective effort involving numerous LSA faculty members with collaborators beyond LSA impacted over 750   teachers through professional development courses and will continue to do so in 2025.

One of the latest initiatives is the design and launch of a new Certificate in AI for Education led by LSA with support from NIE’s Office of Graduate and Professional Learning (GPL). Currently open for registration, the certificate program provides teachers with a deeper and more integrated engagement in AI for Education. The first course will run in Jul 2025. More information is available here.

To showcase AIEd@LSA, LSA has also developed a website. It highlights how LSA faculty are pioneering advancements in adaptive learning systems, personalized companions, AI-assisted collaborative learning, data-driven assessments, and more to shape the future of education in Singapore and beyond. The works involve cutting-edge AI technologies such as generative AI, computer vision, and machine learning.

“One of the core areas of focus for LSA is the transformation of pedagogical practices through technology. LSA not only adapts to the rapid advancements in AI technologies and the changing educational landscape but also takes a leadership role by providing a diverse range of teaching programs and courses, and conducting research and development projects in AI for education.” shared Assoc Prof Chen Wenli, Head, Learning Sciences and Assessment Department. “We aim to develop educators as designers and facilitators of students’ meaningful learning with AI, the guardians of safe, ethical and responsible use of AI technologies, and the role models for lifelong learning about AI”
