The Nineteenth-Century World of Southeast Asia

iPad Young Malay Male in Cream Outerwear Jacket in Group of 4 in Business Lounge

The course hopes to, as an extension of the introductory course, probe into several themes of interest, such as on empire building, diaspora as well as the subaltern and “middling” world, in island Southeast Asian history. Specific primary sources such as memoirs, travelogues and contemporary histories written during the period, will serve as stimuli, hand-in-hand with secondary interpretations to bring participants back into the world of the past in this region. At the center of Southeast Asia, a fieldtrip walk (podcast or live-stream) will be undertaken, based on an 1860 map of Singapore, to relive the environ of one of the most bustling settlement in the region. At the end, it is hoped that students will gain a deeper appreciation of Southeast Asian history in the 19th century.
