At AEF 2025, Adriel Devara Sandji and Richard Alvin Zapanta embarked on a transformative journey that enriched their perspective on innovation, sustainability, and cross-cultural collaboration.

Bringing MSc TIP Skills to Life

Held at Sunway University and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), the two-week challenge pushed student teams to create three-minute video pitches offering practical solutions to sustainability issues aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Adriel and Richard used what they had learned in MSc TIP to hit the ground running. Adriel’s team utilised the Rocket Pitch framework, introduced during the programme’s coursework, to craft a clear and concise presentation under tight deadlines. “The framework helped us convey our ideas quickly and effectively,” he said.

Richard’s group applied design thinking and gap analysis to build a solution grounded in real user needs. “MSc TIP taught us to ask the right questions and strike a balance between creativity and precision,” he shared.

They explored ideas addressing air pollution, rising sea levels, and energy consumption, leveraging their diverse academic backgrounds to refine solutions that were both impactful and feasible.

Richard’s team engaged in dynamic discussions and brainstorming sessions, working across disciplines and cultures to shape meaningful solutions.

Cross-Cultural Exchange and Immersive Learning

Beyond the formal challenge, the programme provided opportunities for cultural immersion and regional dialogue. Participants explored Malaysian traditions through local festivities, cuisine, and performances, including a demonstration of the traditional martial art of Silat and a celebration of ASEAN heritage through traditional national attire.

“Experiencing Malaysia’s culture firsthand and seeing the shared heritage across ASEAN countries gave me a deeper appreciation of our region’s unity,” said Richard.

For Adriel, the trip to Kuala Lumpur had personal meaning. “I hadn’t been back in ten years,” he shared. “This time, it wasn’t just a visit. It was about making connections and contributing to something bigger.”

Learning from Leaders

The final segment took place at the Sunway Resort Convention Centre, where participants presented their solutions and attended panels on regional development, youth leadership, and innovation. They also had the chance to meet policymakers, professors, and fellow changemakers from across the region.

Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, made a special appearance at the event, underscoring the importance of youth-led innovation in shaping ASEAN’s future.

“This experience was more than just academic,” Adriel said. “It gave us a chance to apply our learning and contribute to solutions that matter.”

Richard added, “The event highlighted the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. In today’s world, we need to reframe our understanding, unlearn outdated ideas, and relearn to truly create change.”

As they continue their journey with NTUpreneur, Adriel and Richard return with a broader regional perspective, new professional connections, and a stronger commitment to driving sustainable innovation across ASEAN.
