Dr. Zhao's research examines how individuals and organizations manage the relationship between their business-oriented and socially-oriented values and goals. To this end, he studies both the contextual factors (e.g., institutional changes in emerging markets) that challenge organizations’ capability to coordinate business and social goals to achieve operational sustainability and the micro process through which individuals (e.g., employees, managers, entrepreneurs) navigate the tensions of multiple goals. He primarily focuses on contexts of firms’ social crises and stakeholder management in emerging markets and social enterprises in Asian countries. His research has appeared on Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Ethics, Business Horizons, Stanford Social Innovation Review, Journal of Social Entrepreneurship, Journal of Asian Public Policy, Financial Times, etc.
Dr. Zhao is the co-founder of China Social Enterprise Service Center, which runs a digital platform for nation-wide social enterprise certification. He is also a major initiator of the Beijing Initiative on China Social Enterprise Development.
