Heart Pump
In 2003, Professors Freddy Boey and Ma Jan produced and patented the world’s smallest piezo-electric heart pump, which has been commercially licensed to Orqis Medical, an American biomedical company in Irvine, California.
Weighing at 50g, the piezo-electric heart pump is at least four times lighter than the conventional pumps in the market. It is totally non-metallic and can be coated with biocompatible materials. As it is easily inserted into the body without open heart surgery, there is less risk of infection.
