Imperial-LKCMedicine Student Exchange Programme 2018 in Singapore
From 31 August to 7 September, nine Imperial Year 2 medical students spent a week at LKCMedicine as part of the Imperial-LKCMedicine student exchange programme. During the first few days visit, the Imperial students were engaged in a spectrum of learning activities, including science practical and clinical methods sessions, and a TBL lesson with their LKCMedicine Year 2 counterparts. The subsequent three days saw them paired with Year 3 students to observe clinical teaching during students’ clinical postings at TTSH. The Imperial students also enjoyed the sights and sounds of Singapore as the LKCMedicine students showed them landmarks including Gardens by the Bay, Art Science Museum, Marina Bay Sands and Chinatown. Their visit, which ends today, concluded with a breakfast with LKCMedicine faculty at the CSB staff lounge, followed by a debrief with Vice-Dean for Education Prof Naomi Low-Beer.

LKCMedicine students visit Imperial
From March 5 to 9, 22 Year 2 LKCMedicine students spent a week at Imperial as part of an exchange programme designed to enhance links between the two medical schools and give students the opportunity to experience student life at Imperial. During the week-long exchange, the students took part in a wide range of learning activities, including conducting lung function and breathlessness tests and attending an anatomy and HIV radiology class. The students also visited Charing Cross and Chelsea & Westminster hospitals, and toured the Gordon Pathology Museum and The Old Operating Theatre, Europe’s oldest surviving operating theatre. Students also had the chance to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of London, visiting some of the city’s most famous landmarks and attractions such as the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Shakespeare’s Globe and St Paul’s Cathedral. The exchange concluded with a feedback session and discussion on how to further strengthen the relationship between students from both schools.

LKCMedicine and NUS Medicine host University of Tasmania students as part of the Asian Medical exchange programme
A group of 12 LKCMedicine and NUS Medicine students hosted 11 medical students from University of Tasmania (UTAS) as part of a bilateral exchange programme from January 14 to 21. Organised by the Asian Medical Students' Association (AMSA) Singapore, the UTAS students were able to experience how medicine is taught and practised at both Schools. During their visit to LKCMedicine on January 15 and 16, the UTAS students joined LKCMedicine Year 1 students for a TBL session on microbiology and attended the Year 1 Integrated Clinical Practice sessions at Bukit Batok Polyclinic, where they observed how clinical skills are taught in School. They also toured the technology-enhanced facilities of EMB and CSB including the Clinical Communication Suite, Anatomy Learning Centre and the Medical Library.
Overall, the exchange programme allowed participants to form new collaborations and tighter bonds.

LKCMedicine Year 2 students visited Imperial earlier this year. Their visit, which ends today, concluded with a lunch with LKCMedicine faculty at the HQ staff lounge, followed by a debrief with Vice-Dean for Education Prof Naomi Low-Beer.

Clinical Sensitisation Trip in India
On 17 July, eight LKCMedicine Year 2 & 3 students together with LKCMedicine Associate Professor of Human & Microbial Genetics Eric Yap and Senior Assistant Director and Lead for Practical Skills Ms Ramani Saravanan travelled to Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore for a clinical sensitisation trip. Founded in 1900, CMC is among the top medical colleges and hospitals in India and is committed to ensuring that patients get proper medical care regardless of financial status.
During their two-week trip, the team visited various departments including ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynaecology and dermatology. The CMC doctors also told them more about the rare diseases they encounter and allowed the team to participate in their ward rounds and clinics. Students also learnt about the various community-based healthcare programmes including mobile clinics, home visits and health education, run by CMC’s Community Health and Development Unit. They had the opportunity to join CMC’s community nurses and social workers on their house visits to observe how primary healthcare services are provided with such limited resources. Overall, it was a fruitful and eye-opening experience for all the students.

Asian Medical Exchange Programme 2017
A group of 11 students from LKCMedicine and NUS Medicine hosted 13 students from the University of Tasmania (UTAS) as part of the Asian Medical Exchange Programme (AMSEP), from January 16 to 22. Organised by the Asian Medical Students' Association (AMSA), the UTAS students were able to experience the various learning practices used at both schools. At LKCMedicine, participants had the opportunity to observe the School’s comprehensive TBL approach in classrooms, attended an Anatomy Practical session and clinical teaching during the students’ clinical posting at Ang Mo Kio – Thye Hua Kwan Hospital. Participants also had the chance to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of Singapore through various social activities. Overall, the exchange programme allowed participants to form more collaborations and tighter bonds between medical schools, locally and internationally.

Asian Medical Students' Association International Tokyo- Singapore Exchange Programme
Four Japanese medical students from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) visited LKCMedicine on August 16 and 18 as part of the Asian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) International Tokyo-Singapore Exchange programme, which ran from August 12 to 20. During their visit of LKCMedicine, the TMDU students joined LKCMedicine students for lessons, observing the School’s comprehensive Team-Based Learning (TBL) approach in classrooms and attending Anatomy Practical sessions. They had the opportunity to experience the various learning practices used at LKCMedicine, such as identifying histology specimens, which gave TMDU students a deeper understanding of the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract and broadened their view on the subject. The TMDU students also gained first-hand experience in the hands-on component of the Integrated Clinical Practice (ICP) course on venepuncture. Overall, this visit allowed the TMDU students to appreciate LKCMedicine’s holistic approach to education, which incorporates both the academic and clinical aspects of learning.

Visit from Khon Kaen University Thailand
Ten clinical year students from Khon Kaen University (KKU), Thailand were hosted by LKCMedicine and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine students from 3rd to 9th March 2015 under the Asian Medical Students’ Association Exchange Programme (AMSEP). As the exchange students’ visit fell largely within the recess week for LKCMedicine, they were only able to attend an “Innovations in Medicine: Developing Strategies for Bone Tissue Engineering” lecture by Prof Teoh Swee Hin and tour our Mandalay campus on 9th March 2015. Beside experiencing local food and visiting places of interest, the students also got to care for our community through an afternoon of preparing meals for low-income families at Willing Hearts, a soup kitchen. The past week enriched the students understanding of the different ways governments manage healthcare and also laid the foundation of the new friendships forged.

Visit to LKCMedicine by University of Tasmania students
On 19th January 2015, the exchange students attended an Anatomy Practical, followed by a Team-based Learning session on The Orbit (Eye and Sight), Development of the Eye with our Year 2 students. This exchange was organised by the Asian Medical Student Exchange Programme (AMSEP), a branch under Asian Medical Student's Association (AMSA).
Students from Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University visit LKCMedicineOn January 30, LKCMedSoc hosted students from Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University as part of an exchange programme under Asian Medical Students Association (AMSA). Beside joining in a Team-Based Learning session, the Taiwanese students also attended a party to mark the end of the exchange. The party featured a spread of local delights from Newton Circus, Banana Leaf Apollo and Wings World. The students had fun interacting through food and games with the highlight of the night being the gift exchange between the two groups which marked the end of the exchange but the start of lifelong friendships. The party ended with a game of chaptek before the Singaporean students unwillingly let their Taiwanese friends depart.

First Overseas Medical Outreach of our First-Year Medical Students
Twenty of our medical students participated in the School’s first overseas voluntary extracurricular activity: an excursion and medical outreach to Indonesia. The students themselves had chosen Batam for this first overseas medical experience. The students visited the HIV Kaspar Centre, where they dropped by the laboratory and learned how HIV and Tuberculosis are diagnosed, as well as met with three HIV patients to understand their emotional problems in coping with the disease. That visit exposed the students to the challenges of diagnosing unusual problems in a resource-limited setting. The itinerary also gave the students the chance to go into several villages for a community-based outreach.
The students undertook different tasks which included sorting out and labelling medicines, teaching dental hygiene, measuring blood pressure, weight and temperature, and interacting with the children from the villages.
Profs Pang and Wilder-Smith meanwhile screened and treated many patients. Altogether, the group attended to more than 400 patients.

Visits by medical schools from Sendai, Japan and Dubai, UAE
The School hosted short visits from two long-standing medical colleges from Japan and the United Arab Emirates in the second week of February. Associate Professor Seiichi Ishii, Head of the Office of Medical Education at Tohuku University School of Medicine headed the first visit, while Dr Fouzia Shersad, Director of Institutional Effectiveness at the Dubai Medical College for Girls led the second with a three-women delegation. A brief overview of LKCMedicine’s MBBS programme was provided, after which a tour of the Novena campus followed. The visitors from Dubai also had the opportunity to meet and interact with LKCMedicine students who were at various activities in the campus.

LKCMedicine’s first student exchange programme
From January 13 to 17, the Australian university students exposed themselves to the two different teaching pedagogies in our local schools, and found themselves enthralled by the many similarities each one had with their own curriculum. The first half of the week was spent at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (YLLSoM), where students sat in during lectures and visited the Anatomy Hall. The second half saw the students experiencing one of LKCMedicine’s Integrated Clinical Practice sessions at Bukit Batok Polyclinic and Team-Based Learning at our interim campus in the Research Techno Plaza at NTU.
The week concluded with a party atop the Toh Kian Chui Annex at the LKCMedicine Mandalay HQ, and the exchange students expressed their enthusiasm in having our students over to their campus in July.
