NIE faculty co-publish two journal articles in different journals

Dr Sun Baoqi, Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Child Development (CRCD), Assoc Prof Nie Youyan, Associate Professor at the Psychology and Child & Human Development Academic Department (PCHD), Dr Goh Hock Huan, Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP), Dr Wong Hwei Ming, Assistant Centre Director at CRPP, and Dr Dennis Kwek, Centre Director at CRPP, wrote a journal article titled “Enhancing Bilingual Learners’ Chinese Learning: Which Type of Home Support is Effective?” in the Language and Education journal. The article explores the relationships between home support (Chinese use at home, homework support, and tuition duration), motivational beliefs (self-efficacy, interest, and task importance), learning behaviors (classroom engagement, effort regulation, and effort withdrawal), and Chinese achievement in 1410 Singaporean Grade Five (aged 11) students learning Chinese as a second language. Findings have shown the nuanced roles of home support and motivational factors in educational outcomes, highlighting the need for tailored educational strategies.

Dr Sun Baoqi co-wrote another journal article titled “The Interplay of Home Language Use, Oral Language and Early Reading and Writing Skills in Singaporean Bilingual Children’s English and Chinese Languages” in the Reading and Writing journal, alongside Dr Beth Ann O’Brien, Deputy Centre Director at the CRCD. The article examines the intricate relationships between home language use, oral language skills (phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and receptive vocabulary), and literacy skills (word reading and spelling) in English and Chinese among young bilinguals. The findings suggest that oral skills have different impacts on early reading and writing developments, with oral language skills and literacy outcomes varied due to the frequency of English spoken at home.
