National Institute of Education (NIE) 

The National Institute of Education (NIE) is Singapore’s national teacher education institute with a key role in shaping Singapore’s education. Established in July 1991 through the amalgamation of the Institute of Education and the College of Physical Education, NIE is an autonomous institute of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Master of Arts (Instructional Design and Technology)


The Master of Arts (Instructional Design and Technology) programme is designed for education and training professionals working in schools, universities, polytechnics, businesses, industries and e-learning environments. It is concerned with the application, development and management of information technologies, including e-learning, for solving instructional problems in school and corporate learning environments.

Participants typically include school HOD IT, corporate trainers, instructional software developers, managers of e-learning environments, and other educational and training professionals. Participants in the programme will learn and practise solving real-world instructional and performance problems employing a variety of learning modalities.

Course Requirements

The Master of Arts (Instructional Design and Technology) programme allows for a credit transfer that is equivalent to 1 open elective course from the 2 CE Master's courses (LDO, LC) completed up to NTU's accreditation requirement in Phase I. Assuming successful credit transfers, there are 2 options in Phase II to successfully obtain the Master's programme.

Option 1 (Coursework option):
The students take 6 MAIDT courses and MID944 Methods for Data Collection and Analysis for Instructional Design Projects (2-AU).

Option 2 (Dissertation option):
The students take 5 MAIDT courses and complete a dissertation (6-AU).


Master of Arts (Educational Management)


The Master of Arts (Educational Management) programme is designed for individuals who hold management positions in the education service: principals, vice-principals, heads of department and teachers with positions of responsibility and MOE officers.

This programme pursues three broad aims: (i) to enable aspiring leaders in education to become more informed about critical issues in educational management, and thus to apply intellectual approaches to their work (ii) to help them cope positively and effectively with the management challenges that are currently impacting on education (iii) to enable them to acquire a recognised and valued postgraduate award.

The Master of Arts (Educational Management) programme allows for a credit transfer that is equivalent to 1 MEM elective course, from the 2 CE Master’s courses (LDO, ADSP) completed up to NTU’s accreditation requirement in Phase I. Assuming successful credit transfers, there are 2 options in Phase II to successfully obtain the Master's programme.

Option 1 (Coursework option):
The students take 6 MAEM courses and a Critical Inquiry course* (2-AU).

Option 2 (Dissertation option):
The students take 5 MAEM courses and complete a dissertation (6-AU).


*Those selecting the coursework-only option will take a special course titled MEM 932 Critical Inquiry as one of the courses, designed to act as a capstone experience for the programme.​​

Master of Arts in Professional Education (Training and Development)


The Master of Arts in Professional Education (MAPE) seeks to deepen academic knowledge and competencies for individuals who work in or wish to move into professional roles within various settings of higher and adult professional education.

This programme aims to provide a rigorous understanding of educational practices and systems from social, philosophical, psychological, cross-national and normative perspectives. It also seeks to foster an understanding of central issues in learning and development, education and training, and educational leadership in the various professional contexts. Its specific objective is to educate professional educators with values and beliefs as well as equipping them with a distinct set of skills to drive mentoring and coaching, innovative training, assessment and design practices.

Course Requirements

The Master of Arts in Professional Education (Training and Development) programme allows for a credit transfer that is equivalent to 1 open elective course from the specified CE Master’s courses completed up to NTU’s accreditation requirement in Phase I.

Assuming successful credit transfers, the students take 7 MAPE courses in Phase II to successfully obtain the Master’s degree.
