Cheng Tsang Man Chair Professorship in Energy
The Cheng Tsang Man Professorship in Engineering was launched on 4 July 1999 with a total capital of S$3m, comprising a $1.5m gift from Prima Group and $1.5m from the government as matching fund.
The fund has attracted top scholars and scientists from prestigious institutions like Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University, Hosei University (Japan), University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Centre National se la Recherche Scientifique (France), Princeton University, and Harvard University. Over the past decade, around 20 leading experts have shared research at NTU in areas like wireless communications, computer graphics, computational electromagnets, nanoscience and molecular electronics, and signal processing.
Rather than rotating short-term researchers, the professorship now hires a permanent Chair Professor to lead energy research and mentor younger scientists.
Past Cheng Tsang Man Chair Professors include:- Professor Rachid Yazami (2012-2013)
- Professor Chen Tsuhan (2016-2017)
- Professor David Lou Xiong Wen (2019-2021)
- Professor Wang Xin (2022-2023)
The current Chair Professor is Professor Chan Siew Hwa.
