Sockaroos: Fun in Upcycling Workshop

Date: 7 May 2015
Venue: Lee Wee Nam Library (Level 2)

Sockaroos - a term creatively coined by artist Nana Pong - refers to the first character series of her art, which she creates with socks. Inspired by the colours and prints of socks and also the upcycling movement for sustainable living, she created her first "sock sculpture" (Sockaroos) in 2006 and has not stopped creating since. After the sockaroos series, 30 other characters were subsequently created. Some of her works have developed into other forms of media such as illustrations and 3D printing objects.

De-stress from your exams and make something special for yourself or a loved one. Join in the fun of making a sock sculpture and learn to upcycle used* socks into something lovable! Decorate it with 3D-printed ornaments created by the artist.

*For hygiene reasons, participants will make a sockaroos using all new materials.

About the Artist:

Nana Pong graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Interior Design in 1999. Her passion for sewing led her to focus on creating her art using socks. Inspired by the colours and prints of socks and the upcycling movement for sustainable living, she created her first character series of "sock sculpture" (Sockaroo) in 2006 and has not stopped creating since. Her sockaroo series was well-received in Singapore and elsewhere overseas, for instance in Macau and especially in Taiwan – where she held her first sockaroo exhibition. After the sockaroo series, 30 other characters were subsequently created.

Over the years, Nana has also explored and advanced her art by incorporating other media into her work, such as illustrations and modern media such as 3D printing and augmented reality. A prolific artist, she has created close to 200 sock sculptures in less than a decade. Nana owns an art studio through which she founded "Roomism" – her studio is a space where she continues to explore and develop her art with various media, and to share her art with the community.
