Students' Take: LKCMedicine Anatomy Challenge is back for its 5th edition!
By Chan Jia Ying, Class of 2025
This year, we welcomed 300 participants from 22 different schools to join us in a series of challenges which tested their knowledge in the field of anatomy.
Similar to the previous edition, we planned out a hybrid programme. For Day 1, we dispatched volunteers to the different participating schools for the invigilation of the pen-and-paper test. Following this, students had the opportunity to further explore various aspects of anatomy and the clinical applications of it through a series of virtual booths pre-recorded by our committee members, featuring professors and clinicians who were experts in their fields. After a vigorous round, the top five teams were subsequently invited to join us in the second round of the competition, which was held in the Ong Tiong Tat and Irene Tan Liang Kheng Auditorium at the Clinical Sciences Building of our Novena campus.
The final round was particularly exciting this year due to the easing of restrictions, which allowed us to accommodate a larger audience. It was also our pleasure to invite esteemed guests such as Guest-of-Honour Professor Simon Parson, Regius Professor of Anatomy and President of the Anatomical Society (UK), and Professor Low Cheng Hock, Emeritus Consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Supporters and teachers from the respective finalist schools were also invited to join us in the final round. Beyond that, we also set up a livestream for the event to allow audiences who were unable to be present physically to join us virtually.
The final round was conducted in the form of a gameshow which comprised five different categories: the Video round, Judges’ Special, Go Big or Go Home, Don’t Forget the Lyrics and Rapid Fire. Our guest judges for the event were LKCMedicine Head of Anatomy Assistant Professor Reddy Mogali, radiologist Dr Lee Chau Hung, histopathologist Dr Cristine SL Ding and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Atasha Binti Asmat. After an intense final round, Hwa Chong Institution emerged as the champions and clinched the coveted Championship Trophy as well as the Professor Low Cheng Hock Challenge Shield.
This year, we were faced with numerous challenges in the midst of planning for the event. There were various changes in restrictions which led to some uncertainty during the planning process. However, I am glad that the committee was versatile and adaptable in the midst of all the changes and we managed to make this edition a successful and memorable experience.
As we conclude Anatomy Challenge 2022, I would like to express my gratitude to the committee who had worked tirelessly to make the event a success. I would also like to thank Prof Low, Prof Parson, the judges, our sponsors, the LKCMedicine faculty, Communications & Outreach and Education Management departments, and student volunteers for their support! We look forward to more exciting editions ahead!
