A/P Tan Aik Ling speaks at "The Fourth Science Education Forum" by Academic Divisions of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Associate Professor Tan Aik Ling from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore proposed that science education can play a certain role in promoting interpersonal communication, civilized culture and economic growth in the latest Singapore science education goals revealed in 2019. In order to improve students' ability to innovate and learn in STEM education, since 2014, Singapore has introduced ALP (Applied Learning Program) for junior high school students, focusing on the themes such as cities and urban landscape, sustainability, health and food sciences, and internet of things. Through STEM ALP, learning from different disciplines are used to solve problems. A/P Tan Aik Ling also pointed out that Singapore also face some challenges on the issue of STEM education. For example, how can one develop a specialised STEM teacher? Is it possible to have a STEM teacher who is proficient in multiple subjects such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or should teachers from different disciplines work together to achieve better results? Improving the professional skills of STEM teachers and the career development of STEM teachers need to be  continuously explored and researched.

新加坡南洋理工大学的陈逸玲副教授提出,在2019年最新颁布的新加坡科学教育目标中,科学教育可以在人际交往、文明文化以及职业经济三方面起到一定的推动作用。为提高学生的创新能力和STEM教育的学习能力,自2014年以来,新加坡为初中阶段的学生引入ALP(应用学习项目),围绕最新的六大主题开展,包括城市和城市景观、新兴技术、未来交通、健康和食品科学、物联网和可持续性。初中生在学校接受分科的数理化生等学科教育的同时,也可以自主选择加入到ALP当中,在一种相对灵活的学习环境中自由融合多种学科,结合自己的兴趣依靠科学知识来创造新的价值。陈逸玲同时指出,新加坡在STEM教育这个问题上同样也存在着一些疑问。比如,是否要培养专门的STEM教师,要求每一位STEM教师要同时精通科学、技术、工程以及数学等多门学科,还是不同学科的人士团结协作能达到更好的结果,这些问题都给如何提升STEM教师的职业技能,以及如何培养其职业方向带来了不确定性,需要进行持续地探讨和研究。
