Monologue Mash-Up

ELL NIE Monologue

Welcome to the official website for the ELL / NIE Monologue Mash-Up, an initiative of the English Language and Literature (ELL) department of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore.

The Monologue Mash-Up is a unique form of arts and cultural exchange cum English drama competition between students from different secondary or tertiary institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Open to all secondary or tertiary institutions in the region, this online event allows your students to write and perform their own bite-sized monologues to a live international student audience. No prior experience is necessary. Your students can be either a first or second language speaker of English.

By being a participant, your students will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend two online workshops on writing and performing monologues together with other international participants to learn about both culture and craft together.
  • Perform their monologue online before an audience of their peers.
  •  Judge the performances of students from the other partner institution(s), while they will judge the best performances from your institution.

Rationale

While framed as a competition, the primary purpose of the Monologue Mash-Up is to create a dramatic and creative space for young people to dialogue with each other through the performance of monologues.

We hope that the competition will be the following:

  • A dynamic and live mash-up of different and varied cross-cultural voices.
  • An opportunity for students to learn from and about each other.
  • An enriching space to experience monologues and drama by digital means.
