ELL  NIE Monologue

Competition Participation Requirements

  • Write and perform an original bite-sized monologue that is one to two minutes in duration.
  • While word length will vary depending on the pace of delivery, this means that a participant is only required to write a monologue in a region of 150 to 300 words.
  • Students may work collaboratively to write the monologue. The final monologue should be performed by one actor.

Competition Format

The competition will bring two or more institutions together to perform monologues for a combined audience online. The students from one institution will select the best three performances from another institution at the conclusion of the event.

The competition could be concluded in the space of a month or conducted over two to three months based on student availability.

Competition Dates

MONOLOGUE MASH-UP EVENT CALENDAR 2025 

We invite interested secondary and tertiary institutions to be a part of our online competition cum cultural exchange in 2025.  

The exact dates and timing of writing and performance workshops and final event will be decided in consultation with our registered partner institutions given differences in time zones and schedules.

What does it mean for a human being to belong or not belong? What engenders a sense of belonging?

Event Theme: Reaching Out, Reaching Up 
 
Does reaching out have different implications to reaching out? What drives us to do one or the other – or both? 
Secondary
October 6th – October 11th 
Event Theme: Identity and Place 
 
What is the relationship between one’s sense of identity and place? Is one possible to develop one without the other?   
Tertiary 
October 20th – 24th October 
Event Theme: Looking Back 
 
What does it mean to look back? Is it a sign of weakness or is it acknowledgement of where we have come from or perhaps how far we have come?

Competition Rubrics

The rubric for writing a monologue has been provided for institutions who may want to integrate it into their curriculum or programmes. The rubric for performing a monologue will be utilised during the final event itself to help student participants judge the other performances.
