Associate Professor Lee Ngan Hoe speaks at ITE’s Work Plan Seminar 2023 and publishes a journal article

On 27 January 2023, Assoc Prof Lee Ngan Hoe from the Mathematics & Mathematics Education Academic Group (MME AG), was invited to speak at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West’s School of Engineering, as part of their Work Plan Seminar 2023. Attended by 130 participants, the talk was well received and focused on reflective practice, an offline metacognitive approach towards teaching and learning. Assoc Prof Lee not only unpacked the elements of reflective practice, but also showcased the programmatic research as an effort to understand and advance reflective practice in the classroom.

Assoc Prof Lee also published a journal article titled “The Effect of Constructivist Instruction on Learning Engagement in Mathematics Lessons: A Flow Theory Perspective” in The Mathematician Educator, Volume 3. The article explores the effect of constructivist instruction on secondary school students’ learning engagement, measured as the psychological state of flow, in mathematics lessons. A study of 144 Secondary 3 students from two secondary schools showed that those assigned to receive constructivist of the learning of a mathematics concept reported higher levels of engagement compared to their counterparts learning the same concert via direct instruction. In addition, the results showed that students’ learning engagement decreased over the course of the instructional unit, and that constructivist instruction could potentially offset this negative trend. The overall findings suggest that instruction that is founded on constructivist principles may be promising in mitigating engagement issues, thus promoting the joy of learning mathematics among secondary school students.
