Dr Michael Tan Gives Keynote at Symposium

On 25 November 2020, Dr Michael Tan, Research Scientist at the Office of Education Research, gave a keynote address at the Deakin STEME 2020 Contemporary Approaches to Research in Mathematics, Science, Health and Environmental Education Symposium.

The 2020 symposium focused on practical and theoretical aspects of research methodology, discussing methodological techniques and issues (such as socio-cultural perspectives, productive use of quantitative data, collaborative practitioner research designs and analysing discourse). In his keynote, titled “Trust me, I am an expert: Researching contingent contexts for ecological validity”, Dr Tan spoke on contingency in generalising study findings to real-world settings (ecological validity) and the current STEM education research contexts, where shifts in epistemic thinking have brought about scepticism about the possibility of scientific certainty.
