Dr Sally Ann Jones and Team Publish Booklets on English and Mathematics Learning
The three booklets published by Dr Sally Ann Jones and team
Senior Lecturer Dr Sally Ann Jones from NIE’s English Language and Literature Academic Group and her research team published three booklets on the teaching and learning of English and Mathematics in Singaporean primary school classrooms.
The booklets arose from her project “Learning the Language of Mathematics: An Exploration of Children's Experiences of Learning English and Mathematics at School and Elsewhere in Multilingual, Postcolonial Singapore”.
The first booklet Language matters in mathematics: Singaporean primary classrooms booklet 1 discusses the importance of language in the learning of mathematics, particularly with respect to the understanding of mathematical concepts and solving problem sums.
The second booklet Dilemmas in English teaching and learning: Singaporean primary classrooms booklet 2 highlights findings about students’ reading motivation, perceptions of the teaching and learning of English and strategies to help students master English grammar.
The third booklet Transfer of learning in English and mathematics: Singaporean primary classrooms booklet 3 provides insights into factors that enable or constrain a transfer of learning across subjects (e.g., English to Mathematics).
