Dr Wong Hwei Ming, Senior Education Research Scientist from the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, co-authored a book titled “Student Self-Assessment: An Essential Guide for Teaching, Learning and Reflection at School and University”, alongside Assoc Prof Maddalena Taras from the University of Sunderland, UK. This book explores the basics of student self-assessment and implementation challenges, offering practical solutions and examples for navigating the use of student self-assessment in various subject disciplines in primary schools, secondary schools and higher education. It also shares an informed approach for educators to understand the complexities and subtleties involved in implementing self-assessment, as well as how this might include and impact teachers and students.

Dr Wong was invited by UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) to contribute an opinion piece on the topic of bullying. The article, “You are not alone”: Tackling Bullying Together, published in the UNESCO MGIEP The Blue DOT December 2022 Issue 16 on Designing a Healthy Ecosystem to promote Mental Health, addresses bullying and managing students’ stress as well as mental health and is focused on the age group of 5-18 years old.

On 9 November 2022, Dr Wong was also invited to speak at The Singapore Teaching Practice (STP) Webinar on Designing Learner-centred and Balanced Assessment to Support Student Self-directed Learning. The session by Dr Wong, Dr Karen Lam (MOE) and two Assessment Champions, equipped teachers with knowledge on how to promote a learner-centre and balanced assessment culture for our students, as well as sharing examples from assessment research and practices.
