Literacy Skills in Singapore adults decline as early as the late 20s: OECD study

Watch A/P Loh Chin Ee as she shares more about Singapore’s results in the latest Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), where Singapore saw improvements in literacy and numeracy rankings as well as numeracy proficiency scores but noted an early onset of decline in literacy skills compared to other countries, and proficiency gaps between adults of different age groups and education levels.

She spoke more on the findings, which noted that possible effects behind these findings include the difference in educational opportunities between cohorts, changes in demand for skills over time, and the use of English Language for the survey in Singapore’s multilingual society, and emphasised the importance for companies, institutions and the Government to continue working together to support and encourage upskilling and reskilling for Singaporeans.
